Language Experiences Ideas:
  • Make a bird feeder out of pine cones
  • Hang the bird feeder outside on a tree
  • Paint leaves with jello paint
  • Make play dough
  • Pick apples and make apple boats to float in water.
  • Play Hi-ho-cheerio
  • Read "Fall Leaves Fall"
  • Make a fall collage
  • Make squirrel puppet
  • Go to the church pumpkin patch and find a large pumpkin to carve when we come back from MEA break
  • Make a pumpkin face/jack-o-lantern

Theme: Restaurant
Dates: July 19-29

What an exciting four weeks of summer school we've had! It's hard to believe that summer school is over already! During the past few weeks, we incorporated a lot of vocabulary and language associated with going to a restaurant. All of your children amaze me with the progress they have made in their speech, language, and auditory skills. I couldn't be prouder to have such a wonderful group of students! Thank you for trusting me to work with your child. They inspire me each and everyday. Please read on to find out about some of the language experiences, language structures, and vocabulary that we learned and practiced the past few weeks. I look forward to seeing most of you again in the Fall. For those of you who have graduated from NV, I wish you much success in all of your future endeavors. Remember..."The sky is the limit!!!!" Please keep in touch...you will be missed here at Northern Voices!!

Language Experiences:
  • The teachers put on one of our famous skits about "Going to the Restaurant."
  • We practiced working as a pizza delivery person and bringing pizza to someone's house. Try playing this at home.... lots of great language, vocabulary (deliver, pay, cash, credit card) and fun fun fun!
  • We made a menu with our favorite foods.
  • We made mini pizzas and pretended to get them from Pizza Hut.
  • We set the table at a fancy restaurant and role played the server/customer/chef scenario. Another fun activity to do at home!
  • We made nachos exclusively from Taco Bell:)!
  • We role played going to Burger King.
  • We took a field trip to Burger King and the students ordered and paid for their treat. Thanks for sending in the money for this experience! It was an excellent way to sum up our restaurant theme.

Theme: Sports
Dates: July 6-15

Welcome back to school!!!! It has been great to be back to see all of these smiling faces again! Your kiddos sure are missed here at NV! We had a fun-filled two weeks of summer school learning about sports. Below are some of the Language experiences, vocabulary, and language targets we practiced. I'm looking forward to continuing our last two weeks of summer school learning about restaurants while incorporating countries from around the world (i.e., Mexico, Italy, China, and America). "Oh the places we will go!!!"

Language Experiences:

  • The teachers put on one of our "Made for Broadway" Skits! We introduced many different sports such as: Soccer, football, hockey, golf, baseball, tennis, basketball etc.
  • We made sponge painted soccer balls.
  • We made paper footballs stuffed with newspaper and practiced tackling and making touchdowns. Look out for some future NV pro-football players!!:)
  • We made yummy basketball cookies...always a hit!
  • We practice shooting basketballs and other various sports balls in different size baskets and cups.
  • Our specials guests Henry and Sarah brought in their golf gear to let us examine and demonstrated various tips on how to play golf.
  • We danced to the music!!! We hit the dance floor and practiced gymnastics routines! Great fun!
  • We talked about the sport of swimming and various rules that need to be followed when going to the pool.

Theme: Zoo
Dates: June 1-7

Language Experiences:

  • The teachers will perform a skit about the zoo and zoo rules.
  • We will make a book about the zoo rules.
  • We will make a zoo animal mask.
  • We will categorize different types of animals and their homes.
  • We will make a zoo using animal crackers and pretzels.
  • We will make a giraffe puppet.
  • We will prepare for recognition night!:)

Notes: We are wrapping up the remaining part of the school year! Our last day of school is June 9th. Please join us for recognition night on the evening of June 9th at 6:30pm. I wanted to thank you all for everything you have done this year to help your child learn to listen and speak. They continue to amaze me each and everyday! Know that none of this would be possible without all of your love and support. Some day they will thank you for this incredible gift of communication!! The possibilities are endless for these amazing children.:)

Theme: X-treme Weather and Yard
Dates: May 17-28

Language Experiences:
  • The teachers will put on a weather skit in which we act out various types of extreme weather (thunderstorm, blizzard, hot etc.).
  • We will make a paper plate weather wheel.
  • We will read a book about kites, make them, and fly them outside in the windy weather!
  • We will make a tornado in a bottle.
  • We will do a cloud experiment and craft.
  • We will use straws to pretend to blow various objects like the wind.
  • We will plant pocket gardens (lima beans, wet paper towel, plastic bag, and sunlight).
  • We will plant grass (a "yard") in a cup.
  • We will make a diorama of a yard.
  • We will pack a picnic to share with our friends in the courtyard.
  • We will have a picnic with our friends in the school courtyard.

Theme: Vehicles and Mother's Day!
Dates: May 4-14th

Language Experiences:

  • We will sort vehicles in to Air, Water, and Land categories.
  • We will make a few special surprises for our lovely Mother's!:)
  • We will make a yummy treat for our Mother's Day tea party.
  • The teachers will put on a "Travel" skit (i.e., pack a suitcase, go to the airport, get a ticket, meet the flight attendants, things you can and can't do on an airplane etc.).
  • We will make a banana airplane for snack.
  • We will make a paper plate sailboat.
  • We will do a hot-air-balloon craft.
  • We will do a freight train craft.

Theme: Underground/Underwater
Dates: April 19-30

Language Experiences:

  • We will bury things in dirt and dig "under the ground" to find them.
  • We will make play dough and then construct an "ant farm."
  • We will explore worms.
  • We will make a paper craft ground hog.
  • We will make "ants on a log" for a snack.
  • We will examine various items that sink and float.
  • We will make an ocean with sand, water, and ocean animals.
  • We will make a paper plate octopus.
  • We will make yummy jello oceans!
  • We will go "scuba diving" in our pretend ocean.

Notes: Thank you to all of you for attending your child's spring progress report meeting! Each day I come to work and listen to all of the children communicate for themselves, I'm reminded of how blessed I am to have this job. Thanks to all of you...this wouldn't be possible without your love, support, dedication, and encouragement ( I really could go on and on....:))! Someday your child will be thanking you for all of the sacrifices that you have made to allow them to listen and speak. We are lucky to have such wonderful families be a part of Northern Voices!
